I fought South Shields at the May 2010 General Election for the Conservatives, gaining a 6.4% swing which was a 4% vote increase. The Conservatives polled 7,886 up from 5,207 in 2005. I was born in the North East and grew up in South Shields. I currently live in London and am employed as a Director at Lloyd's Broker Howden International.

Westoe By Election

South Shields By Election in the Westoe Ward on Thursday saw Independent Councillor, Allen Branley who had been allegedly ousted from the chamber due to non attendance of meetings, re-elected to South Tyneside Council. The results as follows:
  • Allen Branley (Independent Alliance) 694 (30.6%, -35)
  • Alan West (Labour) 567 (25%, +6.1)
  • Tony Dailly (Conservative) 320 (14.1%, +3.2)
  • Les Lovelock (BNP) 266
  • William Troupe (Lib-Dem) 225
  • David Wood (Real Independent) 194
The bulk of the vote Branley haemorrhaged went to the BNP, Lib Dem and Real Indepedent, with our Conservative candidate and Association Chairman gaining only a 3.2% swing. I think we have to be real in accepting this says a lot about the work the Conservative Party needs to do in the North East. We should also acknowledge it shows the disenchantment the electorate surely has towards the Government - Labour with the basis of its existing councillors and indeed council leader, should have been enable to scoop up the Independent vote in the ward; but they failed to do this.

We need to capitalise on the dwindling Labour support in South Shields and show Conservatives can offer what the other parties cannot. We must not turn away votes.
