I fought South Shields at the May 2010 General Election for the Conservatives, gaining a 6.4% swing which was a 4% vote increase. The Conservatives polled 7,886 up from 5,207 in 2005. I was born in the North East and grew up in South Shields. I currently live in London and am employed as a Director at Lloyd's Broker Howden International.

King St

"King St is a lovely shopping area" was the observation reported in the Gazette on Saturday 24th January as made by David Miliband further to his recent visit to Shields town centre. I’m sorry to say that I can’t agree with him – King Street used to be a lovely shopping area. We had department stores and a selection of small, often family run businesses, which made up the heart and soul of the high street. Binns closed in the ‘90s and A G Wares the decade before that. T G Allan, Grants Jewellers, Gough Electrical are all also long gone now and the former two had been around generations. The recent closure of Woolworths in King Street only goes further to accentuate the decline of King St. When I walk down there these days all I see are Greetings Card, Mobile Phone and Charity Shops.
Isn’t it a pity there’s nothing being done to encourage enterprise and small businesses in King St and I’m asking this when there are empty shops standing on the street? Why not look at rate relief for small businesses, which would encourage them to the High Street where rates are premium. What of course would be even better and make more sense for small businesses all over the country, would be if the Government looked at a tax break for small businesses. If we can encourage enterprise and innovation we’ll create new jobs at a time they are needed most. The folk of Shields don’t want another card or charity shop on King Street, I think most people would like to find shops different to what they can find on any high street in the country, as well as getting the chance to support small businesses.

Congratulations on getting the nomination for South Shields, it will be a tough one but the experience will be rewarding.
